Today is part two of my attempts to spread holiday cheer, only this one should be way more effective. Break out the booze, because today we celebrate my new favorite holiday, Repeal Day!
On December 5, 1933 the 21st amendment was passed. This effectively repealed the 18th amendment, passed in 1919, that was responsible for prohibition. For the first time in almost 15 years, bars were reopened and people took to the streets to consume alcohol in public. As a symbolic gesture, people raised their glasses at 9 pm (21:00 hours) for a toast to the 21st amendment. 74 years ago today saw the biggest boozefest of the century. If you would like to learn more about Repeal Day, watch this video: I fully intend to celebrate Repeal Day this evening. At 9 pm I will raise a stiff glass of gin and tonic and salute my Constitutional right to imbibe alcohol. I ask that all of my fellow booze hounds join me in a toast this evening.
With that being said, next year marks the 75th anniversary of Repeal Day, and it happens to fall on a Friday nite! So I’m going to go ahead and call it right now that next year there will be massive celebration of Repeal Day; mark your calendars. If there was ever a reason to drink, this would be it.
And a special thanks to all of the people who have responded to my Modern Rock request. I’m loving all of the input, this years disc should be better than ever!
