The Captain Is Feeling Old Old Baby

It seems that every couple of weeks I see something in the media somewhere that makes me feel old.  For some reason this week was packed full of reasons to feel old.  Seems like a good topic for a Friday 5.

Top 5 Things That Are Making Me Feel Old This Week

1.  Ten Year Anniversary Of Country Grammar

It doesn’t really seem possible that it’s been a decade, but this past Sunday, June 27th, was the tenth anniversary of the release of Nelly’s first album.  TEN FRIGGIN YEARS!

When I think about it, I guess it does make sense.  The first time I remember hearing of Nelly was July 4th weekend in 2000.  I remember going over to the Campus Court Apartments across the street from my sister’s house in Springfield and hearing Hot Shit on the radio.1 I remember chuckling when I heard the line “Sing it loud, I’m from the Lou and I’m proud.”  At the time I figured this Nelly guy was just some regional rapper that was getting airplay on local stations.

About a week later I went over to a buddy’s house to watch some television2 and he flipped on the tube to MTV because he wanted to show me the Country Grammar video on TRL.  What!?!  I died laughing when I saw it.

It was so St. Louis and it was SO GHETTO!  I absolutely loved it.  From then on the summer of 2000 was all about Nelly.  I actually bought the album new, which I never did back then.  I also tuned in occasionally to watch Nelly beat out The Backstreet Boys and Brittney Spears on TRL.  It was so amusing to see these local boys in the national spotlight.  It just doesn’t seem possible that it was ten years ago.

2.  My Brothers Are Watching My Dogs

On Monday I had my seventeen year old brother come over during the day and dogsit for me while I was at work.  For many years I’ve been accustomed to helping out my mom by keeping an eye on my kid brothers.  The fact that they are now mature enough to help me keep an eye on my puppies means that they are older, and therefore I must be really old.

3.  The Release Of The Third Twilight Movie

I know it’s an old guy cliché at this point to say I don’t “get” the Twilight movies, but it’s true.  I mean, I get why young girls have crushes on the actors, and I get why young girls are drawn to a story about two guys fighting to protect the same girl.  The part I don’t get is the watered-down vampires vs. werewolves stuff.  It just sounds like such poorly-constructed and lazy writing.  The whole concept just seems ridiculous.

4.  Protesting My Property Tax Assessment

The property tax assessment for our new house came in the mail last week, and it valued our house at about $75,000 more than we paid for it eight months ago.  That’s a lot of money, and it would raise our taxes significantly.  Instead of freaking out, I just went to the Assessor office and filled out a simple protest form on Tuesday.  I’m glad it was that easy, but something about being able to calmly deal with a grown-up problem like this really made me feel old.  I guess it’s just part of being an adult.

5.  Harry Potter Is Now Officially A Teenager

I saw this on Wednesday and it was the straw that broke the camel’s back.  No denying it now.  Yep, I’m old.

Ciao,

The Captain

1.  It’s pretty amazing that I was able to hear anything there at all, with the insane amount of fireworks that were lit that nite.  Those Campus Court folks were crazy.  By the end of the nite they had put 5 sparkler bombs in an old television and managed to blow it to bits.  The cannon-like sound it produced made my ears ring for 2 days, and it managed to attract every cop in a five mile radius.

2.  I lived in a house without air conditioning that summer, so I took advantage of any opportunity to chill at other people’s houses.
