The Captain Loves New Yorks Hottest Clubs

As a long time Saturday Night Live fan, I’m glad to see that the current cast is finally getting better.  My favorite reoccurring bit is Bill Hader as Stefon the club kid.

His bits are so funny that he laughs everytime he does the bit.  I’ve wondered for a while where he came up with such a specific impression of that whole culture.  Last week he was on Letterman and he discussed Stefon for the first time.

The story at the end is my favorite part.  Stefon!

The Captains Is Gonna Miss Jimmy Ballgame

All the talk in St. Louis this week was about Albert Pujols’ contract deadline with the Cardinals1. But as a diehard Cardinals fan, today’s news that Jim Edmonds is retiring is much harder to take. Jimmy was trying to make a comeback for one more season with the Cardinals, but an aggravated foot injury finally made him throw in the towel.

Since he came to the Cardinals back in 2000, Edmonds was one of my favorite players. I was really excited for the chance to see him in Cardinal red one more time. So in honor of Jimmy Ballgame, my Friday 5 is all about him.

Top 5 Things I’m Going To Miss About Jim Edmonds

1. His circus catches

No one play center field like Jim Edmonds. He’s was hands down the best center fielder to ever play for the Cardinals. He won 8 gold gloves in 9 years! Back in 2005 when I had half-season tickets in the bleachers, my favorite thing was watching Jimmy catch the ball up close. His diving catch in Game 7 of the 2004 NLCS was so amazing they actually made a baseball card out of it.

2. His sweet home run swing

Jimmy liked high heaters, and you could tell just by watching his swing if it was going out of the park.

That’s a no doubter!

3. His connection to the community

Unlike a lot of players that pass through, Jimmy actually tried to build relationships in St. Louis. He was a presence here, from media appearances to golf tournaments to late nite sightings. And the club he opened up downtown, F15teen, was a boon for the neighborhood. His joint was only two blocks from my loft downtown, and it did and still does bring lots of business to the area. Investing in the community goes a long way in this city.

4. The gay jokes

As much as I loved Edmonds, it was hard not to makes jokes about his sometimes feminine ways. I never thought he was actually homosexual, but I still enjoyed making the occasional crack about his manhood. And with pictures like this

And this

how could I not crack a few jokes. Still, it was all done with love.

5. He came up big in big games

Jimmy always did well in the post season, which is a difficult thing to do under pressure. His four RBIs in the 2006 World Series directly led to a few wins. But for me, his defining moment was the home run he hit in extra innings in Game 6 of the NLCS. The look on his face summed up how every Cardinal fan felt at that exact moment.

YES!!!  That home run forced a Game 7, and which would send the Cardinals to the World Series for the first time in 17 years. That’s a winner!

1. The media saturation on this topic has gotten real old real quick. But what really bothers me is the constant talk of a negation deadline passing. This is ridiculous. If the Cardinals management called Pujols’ agent and offered a 10-year $400 million contract, are we supposed to believe that his agent would tell them to wait till the offseason?

The Captain Has Been To This Party

It’s funny because it’s true.

The Captains Crew VIPs: Part Zwei

Two years ago I wrote a post about my awesome friend Mike1.  I fully intended to write more posts about the awesome things that my friends are involved with.  And yet somehow I forgot to follow up on this idea.  Today seems like a good time to resurrect this category, so time big-up the newest member of The Captains Crew VIPs

This is Mort.

Mort grew up a few streets away from my childhood home.  He was hysterically funny and a pretty talented skater, which by nature meant he was kind of a slacker.  However, unlike most of the slackers I knew in my youth Mort was determined to give comedy a try.  He moved to Chicago, made a name for himself in the underground comedy scene, and eventually moved to LA.  Now he’s actually doing quite well.  He’s a member of Sad On Vacation, a great sketch comedy troupe.  The group is a regular on the internet’s best source for sketch comedy, Funny Or Die.  This week they had a sketch that was featured on FOD’s main page.

Here my favorite sketch that features Mort, the Jaworski Law sketch.

Mort also had a pretty good thing going last year.  He got a shout out on A.V. Club’s comedy page last year, and he did some work with this guy.

Bob friggin’ Odenkirk!  Most impressive.

My high school posse has always known Mort is a funny guy and it’s nice to see him achieve some success in the comedy world.  So for making comedy pay off, Mort is the newest member of the Captains Crew VIPs.

The Captain Debuts Two For Tuesdays: MR 2011-1

Today I’m starting a new reoccurring post I’m calling Two For Tuesdays.  As I’ve mentioned before, I wanted to do something different to mark the 10th installment of my Modern Rock series.  To that end, I’m going to post two songs that I’m considering for Modern Rock 2011 every Tuesday for the next forty weeks.  By the middle of November I will be finalizing my playlists, so this will give me eighty tracks to play with!

I’m sure by then I’ll have some kind of fun little contest, but for now it’s two tracks a week until November.  I will be withholding my judgment on these songs as I would like to hear other opinions before making any decisions.  Besides the songs and places to obtain said songs they will be presented with comment, so let me know what you think!

The first song up for consideration is Under Cover Of Darkness, the recently released lead single off of The Strokes upcoming album, Angles.

The second song is Everybody’s Under Your Spell by The Duke Spirit, from the Kusama EP released in late December 2010.

Hope you enjoy!
