The Captain Has Returned

I’m back!  And much like the blizzard that was predicted for today, it’s mostly hype.  While the massive snowfall never materialized in St. Louis, I’ve still been locked in doors all day.  It pretty much rules.  What a great day to return to The Captains Quarters!

It feels like I’ve been gone for awhile, but it’s been three months since I’ve blogged anything and about five months since I’ve blogged regularly.  The transition over from Blog-City took much longer than I expected.  Blog-City kept saying for months that they would create an easy to use exporting tool.  Around the middle of October I decided that counting on them was a bad idea.  I don’t want to trash talk my old site providers, but their customer service was pretty terrible.

Once I realized how much work that creating a new site and moving 250 entries over would be, I did the reasonable thing and dispatched a professional.  My college buddy from my Kentwood days, Mattx, is something of an internet wunderkind.  Mattx took the time to transfer over every word, picture, video and link, as well as create the design you’re looking at right now.  He did a superb job, so let me take this time to recommend him to you.  Here’s a link to his site, hit him up for all of your web needs.

And while creating this new site took a considerable amount of time, that’s not the only reason for the delay.  Part of it was just stubbornness on my part.  I did NOT want to move my blog.  I was pissed that Blog-City was closing for what seemed to be general laziness on their part.  I liked the layout of their blogs much better than other sites, and I was generating steady traffic with them, so why move?  Honestly, the thought of starting over really turned me off to the idea of blogging.

After the holidays ended, I slowly began warming up to blogging again.  But as with most things, getting started is always the hardest part.  This time all it took was the a small idea to get me motivated.  Last week I googled the phrase “The Captain’s Return” just to see what came up.  The first result is actually right here in St. Louis.  On the landing by the river downtown is this statue

It’s a statue of Lewis and Clark that was dedicated in 2006 to mark the 200th anniversary of their return.  It’s titled “The Captain’s Return.”  Something about that really inspired me and made me want to return to The Captains Quarters.1 So last week I began plotting my grand return.  Step one was sending out the word on my return.  Step two is explaining how I ended up here.

Which brings us to  I tried hard to hold onto Captains Quarters in my address, but my options were limited. is the website for a resort in South Carolina, and domain name was available, but it costs $2,500.  So in the end I decided to keep it simple and go with

So this is where I’ll be for the foreseeable future, at the new and improved Captains Quarters.  Tomorrow I’ll go into more details about the new and improved part, but for today I think I’ll end it here.  Thanks for coming back for the Captain’s return.  Hope to see you here regularly.

The Captain

1.  Yes, I realize that I’m comparing my 5 months of fighting apathy with their 2 year journey across thousands of miles.  Just go with it.
