The Captain Missed A Couple: MR 2011-15

When I was debating which track to select for this week’s Two For Tuesday, it occurred to me that I should probably review what I’ve already highlighted in previous posts.  I quickly discovered that I’ve made two glaring omissions so far this year.  First, there’s only one song from The Strokes!  So in order to correct this obvious error, here’s Machu Picchu by The Strokes.

After having a few months to absorb Angles, I can definitely say that this is one of the album’s standout tracks.  The song seems to have a clarity of sound that several of the album’s other tracks are lacking.  It’s full of the straight-ahead, jangly riffs for which The Strokes are known.  It’s been on heavy rotation for a few months now, so I’m glad to finally highlight it here.

Also inexplicably excluded is Rill Rill by Sleigh Bells.

Back in January I was caught off guard by this video on Subterranean.  I had heard a few tracks from the groups’ debut album, Treats, when it was released last year and I wasn’t particularly impressed.  It wasn’t until I heard this song, the fourth single from the album, when it was released in January that I paid attention.  And it wasn’t just Alexis Krauss in the video that made me notice, although she definitely didn’t hurt…

Something about the big beats and the sing-songy lyrics made the song stick in my head for weeks.  Even now I find myself humming the Have A Heart chorus.  Given the mediocrity of their other singles, I’m still surprised that this catchy little gem wasn’t released first, second or third.  The duo is reportedly back in the studio right now recording their sophomore album.  I’m hoping that it’s more Rill Rill and less the rest of Treats.  But you know how that goes; I’m the weatherman, they make the wind blow.
