The Captain Doesn’t Think That’s What They Had In Mind

This is a bit of an off week with the holiday and my birthday, so I decided to make it an off week on 2 For Tuesday.  I’ve been listening to 2 hip-hop bastardizations lately that I feel the need to highlight here.  Both songs are sample heavy from unexpected sources.  First up is Otis by The Throne.

This track is the first single off of the Kanye West & Jay-Z collaboration album Watch The Throne.  The track heavily samples Try A Little Tenderness by Otis Redding.  Turning an earnest love song into a swagger-rific track complete with car-boasting video by Spike Jonze is a stroke of genius.  It’s a strange choice that really pays off in the end.

And speaking of paying off in the end, here’s hands down the weirdest collaboration of the year.  Jack White produced a track for Insane Clown Posse.  Seriously.

The track is called Lich Mich Im Arsch, and it samples a Mozart song written about licking asses.  For real.  Listen to this shit.

Insane Clown Posse – Leck Mich Im Arsch by Third Man Records

Without a doubt the most bizarre thing in music this year.  And I love it!  Woot Woot Nijnas!

Ciao,

The Captain
