The Captain Goes For The Unexpected Third

Even though I’m mostly thinking about game three of the Cardinals-Phillies series tonite, there is always time for new music.  In honor of tonite’s game three I’m including songs that make for an unexpected third in a series.  First up is Last Name London by Theophilus London.

This song is the third single this year that I’ve highlighted by Mr. London.  Even though he makes the kind of worldly hip-hop that I adore, his first two singles were decidedly mellow affairs.  The breaking beats and charged up lyrics from his third single are an unexpected departure, but an enjoyable one none the less.  For me personally, I love the track because I can seamlessly substitute the repeating of his name in the refrain with my birth name.  And who doesn’t love singing their name?!

Next up is I’m A Goner by Converse All-Stars

This quirky little track is the third result of the Converse.com series Three Artists One Song series.  Both of the previous tracks in series made it onto past Modern Rock discs, so it’s a no brainer to at least include this track as a possibility.  This time around the three artists in question were Matt & Kim, Andrew WK and Soula Boy.

This quirky little track is not at all what I expected.  Both of the previous two tracks in the series were odes to the joys of summer, so this was a bit of a departure.  Still, the haughty keyboards and solid rhythm make this track a real toe tapper.  And it will be interesting to see after today’s game 3 whether the Phillies or the Cardinals are a goner.  Game on!

Ciao,

The Captain
