Archive for December 13th, 2011
Every year around this time I grow impatient. Before I can put the finishing touches on my yearly Modern Rock discs I have to wait for publications I read to release their Best of the Year lists. There will inevitably be at least a couple of great tracks that I managed to miss during the year that will be featured on these lists. For this week’s 2 For Tuesday, I’m stealing the #1 pick from a couple of highly reputable sources.
First up is Holy Holy by Wye Oak
Last week my favorite review site, AVClub.com, picked Wye Oak’s Civilian as the best album of 2011. So I gave the album a listen and I was surprised that it had taken me so long to discover it. The music is solid pretty much straight through the album, but there wasn’t a standout track in my mind. If I include a track from the album, then Holy Holy would be the most likely candidate. I need more time to listen to Wye Oak before making a decision, but I quickly running out of time!
Next up is Midnight City by M83.
I had heard good things about M83 throughout the year, mostly from @ContraYogini but I hadn’t given them a listen until I saw them on the AVClub.com list of best singles in 2011. I’ve been rocking this amazing track for a week straight now, and I still can’t get enough of the saxophone! As I was getting ready to write about this track today, I saw that another great site for music reviews, Pitchfork.com picked this as their top track of 2011.
While I’m not sure that this is the year’s best song, it’s definitely on the list. And definitely on Modern Rock 2011.
With just two Tuesdays left in 2011, there are only four more tracks left for consideration!
