The Captains New Backyard

The highway being built behind my neighborhood is scheduled to open in less than a month. The project has been under construction for two years now, but it’s been pretty much finished since the beginning of 2012. So I’ve had six lanes of empty concrete to play with for the last six months. A couple of weekends back I climbed up the bridge with my buddy @SpeedyMick and took some pictures. Here’s my favorite.

If they’re gonna build a highway in my backyard then I’m gonna drink a beer on it, dammit. I’m going to go back for one more round of pictures this weekend. Any funny suggestions?

The Captains Dog Days Of Summer

Today is the first official day of summer this year, but the weather has already felt like it for months. The temperature is currently 96° in St. Louis and the mercury is still rising. Summer just began and it already feels like the dog days. And speaking of dog days here is this week’s photo for #WaybackWednesday

Here I am sweating it out with my sister and our dog Heidi when she was just a puppy. I’m guessing this was probably taken in the summer of 1985, back when summer was still a magical time. I want to go back to the time in this picture, when summer meant camp and pools and freeze pops. Nowadays summer means that the heat is stifling and the grass is brown, and it’s only just began! I get the feeling it’s gonna be a long summer.

The Captain Needs To Arrange More Breakups

After seven long years Fiona Apple is back! Her new album was finally released today following a very long wait. Let’s kick off #2ForTuesday with the video for the album’s first single, Every Single Night.

Please don’t mistake my excitement for her new album as a complaint about the wait. While seven years is a long time, I respect that Fiona only writes new music when she feels inspired. Her highly personal music would probably feel forced if she put herself on a arbitrary timeline. And since it always sounds to me like all of her songs are about breakups, I’m assuming that it took her several years to go through a relationship so she could write about its demise.
And speaking of failed relationships, here’s Cat Power with Ruin

I’ve never really been a big fan of Chan Marshall. I’ve dug a couple of cover songs she’s done, but I’ve never thought her albums were that great. I guess all she needed was the right inspiration, because I love this track. I read that the impetus for her new album was her breakup with actor Giovanni Ribisi. Well if that’s all it took to write a killer track like this, then she should’ve ended that relationship years ago. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go arrange for Adele to get dumped by her boyfriend so we can keep the hits rolling!

The Captains Drafts A Local

Congratulations to future baseball superstar Fred Ford. He’s the kid brother of my buddy @DanFjord and more importantly he’s now a prospect in the minor leagues. Fred was a superstar at Jefferson College this past season, check out his impressive stats here. The kid is a natural hitter with power to both fields, and accordingly he was drafted in this year’s MLB Amateur Draft. Fred went in the seventh round to the Kansas City Royals and is now a member of their farm system. Here’s a video I recorded from NewsChannel 5 on the day of the draft.

Mark my words: this kid is the future of baseball.
