Archive for September, 2012
Probably my favorite thing about Facebook is it’s unique ability to keep me up to date on major events happening in the lives of my friends. Just this morning I saw that my old pal Bessie just had her third child. Congrats Mama Bess! Plus there was a mess load of weddings over the past few weeks that I enjoyed vicariously through Facebook, including Sarasota Patrick, @SpeedBumpVehige and KU Katie. I decided to pick one at random for #WaybackWednesday this week. Here’s KU Katie with Easy B back in the Suite Ds days.
So let’s take a cue from Easy B and raise our cans of Busch beer and say Cheers to wedding season! Although according to KU Katie’s last post on Facebook she’s honeymooning in Ireland, so I’m guessing she won’t be drinking too many Anheuser Busch products…
In looking back over the past couple of months here at Captains Quarters I’ve been a real bum when it comes to posting new music. 2012 has been a great year for tunes, especially considering it’s the 10th anniversary of my Modern Rock discs. So what gives? Well, enough with the musical vagrancy; it’s time for some serious rocking! Here’s The Hives with Wait A Minute to start off #2ForTuesday
This is easily the tightest 3 minutes of rock this year. The Hives are at their best when they stick to straight ahead rock like they do with Wait A Minute. The video bears a striking resemblance to Reptilia by The Strokes which is fine in my book. I’ll take a taut, badass little track like this over 99% of everything else I’ve heard this year.
Next up is a track that I’ve been mildly obsessing over for the past few weeks. Check out Genesis by Grimes.
Funny story about this song. Visions by Grimes is one of my favorite albums this year, and yet I hadn’t heard Genesis until I saw this video on 120 Minutes. When I went back to check how I could possible miss a stunner like this, I discovered it was not my fault. Apparently whoever uploaded Visions to the torrent sites mistakenly left off track 2, Genesis. Bonus track! And it turned out to be a massive bonus thanks to this stunning video.
The video was directed by Grimes herself, Claire Boucher, and prominently features LA artist Brooke Candy. I love all of the video game/anime touches throughout clip, especially all of the weapons and Grimes’ childish look. On Twitter she referred to her hair as “Daenerys Targaryen White” which is just brilliant.
I’ve watched this video and listened to this song so many times in the past few weeks that I’m purposely taking a break so I don’t get sick of it. So rock this out for me!
Yesterday was the final day of the Fantasy Baseball season. My team, Wild Turkeys, had a great season and easily made the playoffs. In the first round of the playoffs my team was way ahead up until the very end. On the last day of Round 1 my pitchers choked big time and I wound up losing at the last minute. After such a well played season it was super frustrating to lose at the last minute.
I’m trying real hard not to draw parallels between 2012 Wild Turkeys and the Cardinals. But the similarities are noticeable. Last year my surprise Fantasy Baseball win mirrored the miraculous World Series win of the 2011 Cardinals. Right now the Cardinals have a slim lead in the Wild Card race with ten days left to play. With my man Chris Carpenter back on the mound I’m really hoping that the Cardinals have enough gas in the tank to make another big playoff push. I’m ready for an encore!
I didn’t get a chance to thank everyone for the wonderful birthday gifts, so allow me to do so now. Thanks to my mother for this awesome 2011 World Champions wall hanging for my office.
Now all the holes are finally covered!
Thanks to my lovely wife for this pair of Cole Haan pair of work shoes.
She bought me the exact same pair in brown last year, and they’ve been the best pair of professional shoes I’ve ever worn.
And thanks to my dad for the randomly funniest gift of 2012: membership into a Beer of the Month Club. Hilarious right? Oh, I forgot to explain the joke.
See, a couple of weeks ago I made a joke along the lines of a Beer of the Month club being a very Hipster gift. Which therefore means my dad is a Hipster, which sounds about right. So right in fact that there’s already a book on the subject.
And now that I think about it, maybe I did steal some of my style from my dad. After doing a little investigative digging, I found irrefutable proof of my obvious theft. Here’s the smoking gun for #WaybackWednesday this week. First let’s look at a recent photo of me.
Here’s a picture I put on Instagram using the 1977 filter of me wearing a Captains hat and oversized glasses while playing it cool.
And here’s my Dad.
He’s wearing a Captains hat and oversized glasses while playing it cool. And the photo is discolored because was printed in 1976!
Amy Shumer is still my favorite current female comedian, but lately Natasha Leggero is giving her a run for the money. You be the judge in a #2ForTuesday laugh off
