After spending the last two weeks of #WaybackWednesday in the California sun we are heading to the desert for my Year On The Road. I left California a day after turning 25 and headed east through the badlands. I came to a fork in the road with a big decision to make. I could either head north and spend a weekend alone in Las Vegas, or I could head south and spend it alone at the Grand Canyon. It was a tough decision, but I ultimately steered south towards Arizona.
At that point in my life I had already been to Vegas once and I thought a weekend there by myself could lead to big trouble. Instead I spent a reflective weekend hiking the Grand Canyon alone with my giant digital camera.
This is from September 7th, 2003. I had two whole days to wander around the Canyons solo. Plenty of time to practice what the kids now call Selfies.
Of course I took lots of other pic of the beautiful scenery
And spent a lot of time contemplating my life at that moment. The whole experience really changed my life for the better. The world seemed like such a big and beautiful place that was calling my name. It was that weekend that I decided for good that I wanted to go back to school to get a Master degree. And within a year I was in graduate school at UMSL. Looking back ten years later, I can still remember how clear everything seemed while I was sitting on the edge of a cliff looking down. Another high point in a year full of life changing events.
