The Captain Is Going A Bit Goofy

What the hell is up with popular music this year?  Normally by the half-way point of the year I have at least an hour of quality new music.  This year I barely have half an hour.  Granted, there is hope on the way in the form of Jack White’s new record that was released today.  So until I have a chance to digest Lazaretto, let’s look at some of the other goofy music that I’ve been listening to instead of my usual modern rock on #2ForTuesday

First up is NRG by Duck Sauce

Next up is Tangerine Girl by Asher Roth

The Captains Brother Knows How To Commence

On Saturday my youngest brother graduated high school.  That is an accomplishment, but nowadays it’s sort of an easy accomplishment for a white kid from the suburbs like Charlie.  But my brother didn’t just graduate, he gave the commencement speech!

Charlie Speech

In a family full of overachieving hams, he managed to outdo us all!  It was a hell of a good speech too, by far the crowd favorite based on the reaction.  But don’t take my word for it, see for yourself.

I had to sneak down to the front to get that footage, as you can kind of hear at the end of the video when some security lady gets on my case.  Totally worth it though for such a great speech.  Although I was a bit disturbed to realize that his father’s side of the family had the millionaire, and our mother’s side had the illiterate and the moonshiner.  Ha!

Not only was the speech great, but he even managed to end the video with his phrase “See you later.”  How cool is that?!  Almost enough to make up for him botching the catch of his graduation cap.

The family all gathered afterwards to celebrate Charlie’s accomplishments

 Charlie Cake

And to narrowly avoid some storm damage in the afternoon.  I am a very proud big brother and I wish Charlie all the luck in college next year.  Good job baby bro!

The Captain Parties Like Its 1998

This weekend I saw a friend I hadn’t seen in ages.  Here I am at the Cardinals game with Avery and my college roommate Eric.

 The Long Hairs

The last time I saw Avery was sophomore year of college.  Back in my early days at SMS, Avery was a member of the long haired weirdo club that was my friend group.  And then the first week of our junior year he drove to California and has been in San Diego ever since.  I hadn’t heard a peep from Avery until earlier this year when we became friends on Faceplace.  Eric and I have reminisced about Avery many times over the years since, so we were both thrilled to hear he would be in St. Louis this past weekend.  Eric even managed to dig up his old I ♥ New Florence hat from back in 1997.

 New Florence 14

Seeing that hat brought on some serous nostalgia, so I went digging and found a picture of Eric wearing it for #WaybackWednesday.

 New Florence

I’m pretty sure that Avery took this picture back in 1997.  There’s a long story about that hat that involved boxes of oranges and a large scale fruit fight, but that is probably better told in person.  Instead I will simply say that 16 years was far too long to go without seeing Avery.  Let’s hope we don’t go till 2030 without seeing each other again!
