Last week for #WaybackWednesday I highlighted the first major trip of my year spent on the road back in 2003. As I mentioned when I began, most of my traveling was done via my new car over the course of a few weeks. But this wasn’t always the case. Every so often an emergency would pop up and I would have to hop on a plane for a brief trip to somewhere too far to drive. Business Class!
My first such business flight was at the beginning of March 2003. I flew into San Antonio for the weekend, but spent most of my time up in Austin, TX. As luck would have it, a couple of good friends from high school were living in Austin at the time. Here’s Meriam and Ellen from ten years ago.
And here’s a picture of us flashing hand gestures.
I am throwing up an “N” for North County, Meriam is flashing a “W” for Hazelwood West, and Ellen, well she’s never liked having her picture taken…
This was my first time visiting the city, and I was not quite ready for what I saw. I had no idea this community of weirdoes were living in the middle of Texas. One weekend spent hanging out with Ellen and her husband Andy and I understood the appeal of the Peoples Republic of Austin. They took me all over town, including the amazing Alamo Drafthouse and to a killer barbecue joint. I liked it so much that I went out of my way to make several trips back to Austin that year. I still speak highly of the city, despite it being located in Texas.
Since then Meriam has moved back to St. Louis and Ellen still resides in Austin. I haven’t been back since 2006, but I’ve been tempted several times with South By Southwest. Maybe next year?
